Ryan Grubb: A Rising Star in Offensive Football Coaching

Starting his career in American football coaching, Ryan Grubb has made tremendous achievements over the years. His exemplary skills of offensive tactics and leadership have brought him great acclaim. To further fuel his impressive credentials, he is the offensive coordinator of the University of Alabama, having previously worked in both professional and college football.

Personal Life and Professional Life

He played football at Kingsley-Pierson High School in Iowa and also in Buena Vista University from 1994 to 1997 where he played as a wide receiver and running back. He led the team as a captain and even started in a total of four seasons which eventually opened doors to him coaching in the future.

Career Start

Grubb joined his former high school to work as a coordinator and after formulating various impressive strategies, he was awarded Iowa high School Athletic Association Class 1A coach of the year award. Following that, he moved to the University of Sioux Falls, starting off as a coach for the offensive line as well as a coordinator for the running game. During Grubb’s time at Sioux Falls, he was able to coach two national champions in NAIA and earned United States Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association NAIA national coach of the year in 2008.

Work with Kalen DeBoer

The most remarkable moment in Grubb’s life is the culmination of multiple collaborations with head coach Kalen DeBoer at Sioux. He moved on with him to every institution, and in 2014, Grubb was appointed as DeBoer’s subordinate for the Eastern Michigan University team in charge of the offensive line.

At Fresno State, which he joined in 2020, he was able to further develop his working relationship with Grubb, who was the offensive line coach and run game coordinator. The partnership greatly assisted in improving the offensive capabilities of the team.

Tenure at the University of Washington

In 2022, Grubb becomes the offensive coordinator of the University of Washington and also the quarterbacks coach. His novel approaches to offensive strategies helped transform the team into one of the best performing teams in the country while he was part of the team.

Transition to NFL with the Seattle Seahawks

The success that Ryan Grubb achieved at the college level saw him make the jump to the NFL, where he accepted a position as an offensive coordinator for Seattle Seahawks in 2024. His departure from the Seahawks, however, was much sooner than desired. Ryan Grubb left the team during January in 2025 after head coach Mike MacDonald blamed him for their poor performance the previous season where they ended 18th for points scored and 28th for rushing attempts.

Return to College Coaching at Alabama

After leaving the Seahawks, Ryan Grubb joined Kalen DeBoer and assumed the offensive coordinator role at Alabama. This move came as no surprise as Alabama aimed to regain their status as a dominant offensive powerhouse in the league. Grubb’s prior experience made the decision very logical.

Coaching Philosophy and Impact

Ryan Grubb has always received praise for the his aggressive approach toward his innovation in offensive schemes and the development of quarterbacks.

His offenses show a remarkable versatility and effectiveness, frequently landing in the top five for most performance measures. Mr. Grubb’s collaborative style with head coaches like Kalen DeBoer has driven substantial improvements in team performances in many programs.

Struggles and Endurance

Grubb’s journey is not without its share of challenges. One of the low points of his journey was the Seattle Seahawks, where his lack of success demonstrated the challenges stemming from poorly aligned coaching philosophies and the adjustment from college guest coaching to professional head coaching. Even in these circumstances, Grubb’s ability to remain committed to his coaching principles ensures his continued prominence in the sphere of sports.
